Studio Oil Painting with Matt Kania (Evening Session)

This class is for everyone who wants to learn the basics of oil painting, to advance existing painting skills, or to learn new working methods. Matt will demonstrate in each session and as a class we will explore important painting techniques. Additionally, each student will receive individual instruction based on level of experience. All class sessions will involve direct painting from still life to craft representational oil paintings on canvas. Topics covered in class will include: creating a composition on canvas, evaluating observed color, discerning values, mixing paint colors, ways to use a paint brush, working with a palette knife, different ways to start and finish a painting, and more.
This class is open to very beginners to intermediate painters. Students are invited to bring their own oil painting supplies, but Duluth Art Institute will have all necessary supplies to use during class. If a class is canceled due to weather, the make-up date will be Tuesday, February 21, 2023.
