DAI Downtown Galleries  |  October 23, 2024–January 6, 2025  |  Reception November 8

Artist Tom Rauschenfels creates artwork that not only stimulates visually but also educates viewers about the intricacies of printmaking. Residing on Park Point in Duluth, MN, Rauschenfels draws inspiration from his natural surroundings, a connection he developed from a young age while exploring his craft and love for water.

During his early childhood, Rauschenfels was confined to wearing a hip brace, which led him to explore art through pencils, pen & ink, watercolors, and oil paints. This period of introspection and creativity was enriched by the guidance of mentors who introduced him to various techniques, including plein air painting, the significance of art history, and the works of German Expressionists.

Rauschenfels' work delves deeply into the exploration of printmaking materials and techniques. The exhibition features prints on a variety of papers, many of which are hand-made from organic materials. Among these, Mulberry paper stands out for its soft, slightly translucent quality.

34 is a unique exhibition that blends fine art with educational elements, showcasing Rauschenfels' original prints alongside the corresponding printing blocks. The prints, which feature a mix of figures, sailboats, and natural elements, reflect his childhood memories and offer a vibrant, textured view of Park Point and its surroundings. This exhibit invites viewers to experience nature through Rauschenfels’ artistic perspective.
