FOR THE LOVE OF WINTER SERIES: BEGINNING KNITTING WITH KATHY THOMAS

February 26, 2021 at 6pm-8pm

Location: ZOOM

Description: In this class you will learn the basics of knitting in order to eventually build the skills to knit utilitarian winter garments. You will learn to cast on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and how to bind off. These four techniques are skills that with practice will lend to a lifetime of knitting. Beyond utilitarian uses of knitting, knitting and fiber art are making a big impact around the world as a fine art material in this contemporary era. Artists are embracing these traditional materials and pushing them beyond wearables to create sculpture, images, and even protest art. It all begins with a cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch, and bind off.

Teacher Bio: Kathy Thomas is the owner of Yarn Harbor, a yarn store in Duluth that has been in business for 14 years. She has been teaching people to knit from day one. Thomas started knitting in 2001 with the desire to create hand-knit socks. While knitting socks never became a passion, Thomas did find artistic expression in the freedom to take a pattern and make it one’s own. Wool is definitely her fiber of choice while keeping her hands knitting in the winter. In the summer you will find Thomas in the garden, as she is also the owner of Flowers on the Rocks, a flower garden design and maintenance business.
