Ceramics

Independent Study in Clay

Love working in clay but lack the necessary space and tools? If you have some experience with ceramics this is a wonderful way to spend the cold winter months. Check in once a week with other classmates and our instructor to help focus your work, and use the rest of the week to create. “Merlin,” the gas kiln, will be fired during this class.

Beginning Clay

Learn the basics of hand building, wheel throwing, glazing, and firing in this introduction to ceramics. Perfect for people with no experience using clay or for those just looking for time to improve their skills in a supportive and inspirational environment.

Creativity Through Limitation: Refining Form & Surface

Mon., Feb. 8 – April 5 (no class on 3/15)

Take your functional clay work to the next level; explore the technical and conceptual process of fashioning forms such as bowls, pitchers, or platters, while defining your personal artistic style. Surface treatments will be limited to two glazes and simple slips, stains, or underglazes – when faced with such limitations how will YOUR creative mind work? Demos in throwing/altering, hand building and surface carving will be provided along with image presentations on style and the history of modern ceramics. Electric (oxidation) and gas (reduction) firings will be possible. Previous hand building or wheel throwing experience is required.

Airbrush Glazing Techniques

Add another level of beauty to your clay pieces through the use of an airbrush. An overall base glaze will be applied to newly fired and previously bisqued work through dipping and brushing. Decorate with the airbrush; learn glazing techniques including masking while practicing proper equipment maintenance. This is a surface decoration method that any artist potter studio could set up inexpensively; learn the basics here! Previous clay experience is required.

Beginning Weaving on a 4-Harness Loom

We’ve condensed this class into three weeks to help keep the weaving juices flowing. This class will introduce beginning weavers to the fun and creativity of weaving on a floor loom. Students will learn how to prepare and warp the loom, and practice a variety of weave structures and patterns; culminating in the weaving of a simple project. Add beauty to your wardrobe or home with a handcrafted work of art, created by you!

Basic Spinning

Have an old spinning wheel in your house, just waiting to be used? For beginners or those in need of a refresher course, learn the satisfaction of spinning your own fibers the old fashioned way. You’ll come away with unique, beautiful yarns to use in special projects, or at least the skills to continue spinning at home. Don’t have the proper tools to learn but want to give it a try? A limited number of wheels are available for use in the fiber studio.

Design as Creative Process: When the Muse Comes Calling

How do you get inspired? How do you see your world? What is the creative process that leads from your ideas to a fully designed work of art? Explore and embrace your inner muse in this fiber workshop designed for artists of ALL backgrounds. Take the basics of design, the elements and principles, and experience the act of creating from within. Experiment with sketches and different fiber materials; it’s about the process, not necessarily the product. Learn the inspirational tools needed to take your own art to the next level. Instructor Erika Mock has been knitting for over 40 years and working as a full time artist, designer, and instructor for 18 years.  Erika believes that "We access creative spark by letting the materials and our hands guide us.  It is a multi-layered journey of asking questions, experimenting to expand technique, trusting, and getting out of our own way.  It is when we are flowing, in process, that we catch the unexpected and start to see with new eyes." 

Fiber Preparation for Spinning

Go from the sheep to the spinning wheel by learning how to prepare your fibers the proper way. Find out how to choose and wash fleece and experiment with several methods of carding to get the best yarn out of your wheel. An important class for anyone who is interested in the art of spinning.

Small Frame Loom Weaving

(Children are only $10 each when signed up with a regular priced adult)
Get back to the very basics and discover the fun of weaving on a simple scale. You don’t need a floor loom to start in this art form – all you need is a frame and some yarn or rags and the possibilities are endless. Weave mug rugs, small wall hangings, doll house rugs, or wristbands. This class is for ALL ages – sign up the kids and have some family fun together. (Ages 9 and up).

Spinning Beyond the Basics

Do you have a handle on the basics of spinning but want to expand your repertoire? Learn how to fine tune your wheel, spinning techniques, and plying (3-ply yarns will be addressed). Get comfortable spinning different breeds of fiber. Prior spinning experience is required, also perfect for rusty beginners just getting back into it.

Special Two Day Weaving Workshop with Wisconsin Fiber Artist Deb Sharpee
Diamond Rag Rugs – A New Angle for a Beloved Textile

A rag rug weaver for over 25 years, Deb Sharpee has been instructing other fiber artists for almost as long. Her work has been published in “Handwoven” magazine and the book “Weaving Contemporary Rag Rugs.” This workshop will focus on a diamond rag pattern; a term used to describe the ikat-like effect achieved by the carefully planned use of repeating weft colors, resulting in strong diagonals. Usually associated with more complex looms, you will learn how to accomplish this only two shafts and some basic arithmetic. There are countless variations on the technique making it a useful tool for your weaving repertoire. Learn the mathematics of how this works, creating weavings from either your own or computer generated designs. Your final product will be several functional placemat sized examples and an understanding of the process. Previous weaving experience is required.

Three Days in the Plein Air with Sue Pavlatos

Paint what you see in the beautiful backyard of the Twin Ports as you learn traditional watercolor plein air techniques from a local artist and expert. Sue Pavlatos has been a fixture in the region’s art community for over 30 years as an accomplished watercolorist, instructor, and owner of Art Options Gallery. Her work was most recently featured in the DAI’s landscape exhibit “Outopia” this past summer. The first day of this workshop will be classroom instruction on location painting – how do you paint what is in front of you as it constantly changes? Atmospheric light, shadow, and color mixing will be addressed along with the proper use of equipment and materials. The rest of the weekend will be on location on the grounds of Fairlawn Museum in Superior and along the Lakewalk where the visual possibilities are endless. Demonstrations, individual instruction and group critiques (including a tea!) will be part of the day. Get out of the house and into the plein air while painting with a group of fellow artists who are looking for inspiration and creative support. Box lunches will be provided.

Hailing from Colorado, Stephen Quiller is an internationally known painter, workshop instructor, and author of several books including “Water Media: Processes and Possibilities” and “Color Choices.” Stephen finds inspiration in his backyard, the San Juans, where he paints everything from beaver ponds and snow shadows to water reflections and wild iris. This workshop will focus on landscapes and color while combining watercolor with acrylic mediums. Get inspired by one of the leaders in watermedia painting during this intense, but very rewarding weeklong workshop experience. Groups critiques and individual instruction will help bring your artwork to the next level.

Oil Painting from Life: Still Life Studies

Learn how to paint from life with one of our regional experts, Lee Englund. Lee has taught painting and drawing in the Duluth Public Schools, and for private lessons, for over 20 years. Lee's paintings are “an emotional response to what he observes. Bring life to the classical still life in an intimate studio setting with paintings of a smaller scale, turn an everyday object into something of epic proportions. Previous oil painting experience is required.

Portrait Painting in Oils Intensive

Build a painting from the ground up while working from one model and one pose in this intensive weekend workshop. The first night will consist of completing an underpainting, focusing on proportion, composition, and value.  Day two will focus on the color building process, step-by-step, as you reach a completed painting. This class is ideal for those who have some understanding of portrait drawing and would like to try portrait painting. Already have experience? Get some quality time with the model as you spend an intense weekend examining your portrait painting skills with an experienced instructor.

Oil Painting: The Basics and Beyond

Paint like the masters after you learn about the fundamentals of oil painting in this class for beginning and intermediate artists. An excellent primer for new students who wish to experience the intricacies of oil paint – color mixing and paint application will be addressed, as well as new techniques that will satisfy those with previous experience.

Figure Oil Painting Intensive

Paint the figure from a live model using traditional techniques as you create a single masterpiece over this 3-day intensive course. This course will focus on both the technical application of paint as well as creating an engaging and luminous painting through composition, color, and attention to detail. Get ready to be inspired and take your work to the next level. Prerequisite: Some experience with rendering from a model and use of paint.

Oil Painting & the Human Body

Centered on students that have a basic understanding of oil paint, and some experience with figure drawing, this course will start with the basic layout of an oil sketch and bring you through rendering a figure in oils by the end of the class period.  A range of techniques will be explored, centered around painting Alla Prima (a style of painting where, instead of building colors up with layers, the painting is done in one session while the paint is still wet. From the Italian word which literally means at once).  Color Mixing, paint application, and basic composition will also be explored.

Photographing the Figure in Landscape: Long Exposure Techniques

Spend a weekend exploring photography on location with Wanda Pearcy – but first get inspired by her recent DAI exhibition “Interwoven” in the George Morrison Gallery through Feb. 7th, 2010. The evocative images feature the artist almost becoming one with her surroundings, creating unity of the body with the landscape through long exposure techniques using a digital camera. Explore two historical sites in the Duluth area while discovering several in-camera tricks for altering the subject. You will need a digital camera with adjustable shutter speeds, a tripod, and lots of creative enthusiasm. Dress for the weather –we’re making art in the elements!

The Artist’s Book: Visual Journaling

Explore the art of book making and visual journaling in this hands-on creative workshop. Learn the tools and techniques needed to create an archival six signature hardcover book; then fill the pages with a variety of hand crafted pages that you dye, paint, tear, sew, expand and collage. Each page is a unique work of art once you begin the act of visual journaling – generate authentic imagery that incorporates words and pictures, a representation of your inner self, your inner landscape, in a hand held work of art. Supply list will be provided.

Cyanotypes Using Digital & Paper Negatives

An inexpensive yet incredibly versatile way to express yourself photographically, no darkroom required! Discovered in 1842, cyanotype is a monochrome photographic printing process that gives a cyan-blue print when exposed to ultraviolet light and flushed with flowing water. Bring photographic images on a disk or thumbdrive to be converted into digital negatives; Photoshop experience is not required unless you want to manipulate the images further. Learn about coating on alternative surfaces, various toning techniques and contemporary practices of cyanotype art. A very user friendly and exciting process that can be easily replicated at home!

Lino-Cut Holiday Cards

Create a unique edition of holiday cards as you learn the fine art of linoleum printmaking. Carve a design into the soft linoleum block; roll it with ink, then print onto brightly colored paper. You’ll leave with a whole set of cards to send to your friends and family. It’s a perfect way to start the holiday season. Ages 9-14.

Art Camp Sampler

It’s a one-day snippet of our summer kids’ art camp in the middle of winter. Take a break from your long school holiday and get a taste of the art world at large. Teen Wheel Throwing

Action Sculptures

How do humans and animals move when they’re running? Dancing? Flying? Explore the dynamics of movement by creating wire sculptures of a person or your favorite animal in action, and then wrap the sculpture in plaster to add volume to the forms. Add paint and other supplies for extra embellishment. (Ages 7-12).

A Day of Clay

$30 ($35 non-members)
Get your hands dirty as you play in the clay. Create a set of tiles and other forms using textured stamps, colored slip, and your imagination. Learn about the “sgraffito” method of decorating – drawing into the colored slip to expose the clay underneath for a graphic contrast. The finished fired work can be picked up the following week. (Ages 6-11).

Artventure! (Ages 7-12)

We’ve expanded our homeschool class to every other week to expand the art opportunities for you and your children! Sign up for one semester or both….all of the projects will be new, with connections made to all aspects of the curriculum, literature, science, social studies and more. Visual art is the earliest form of expression and communication. Come explore art through the ages and from around the world. Investigate the historical context and purpose of art objects from different cultures and eras, and gain insight into what self-expression meant to them. Then become a part of art history yourself, as you create art projects inspired by what has been created in the past. Students will use a variety of materials, such as clay, plaster, charcoal, watercolor paint, and much more. Classes will begin with a presentation in our computer lab, followed by group research, personal sketching, and art production. Some writing in the form of reflections will be encouraged. Study guides and more research opportunities will be provided for parents to further the process throughout the month with their children. A morning snack will be provided.

Full payment for Semester Two is due by January 15 to secure your spot in the class
(cash, checks, Mastercard and Visa are accepted). You may add your child’s name now without paying, but if payment is not made by the deadline your spot will be dropped and given to the next person on the waiting list. Space is filled as registration and payment are received. 15 student limit. You can register for Semester 2 of the Home School Art series without having taken Semester 1.  The only prerequisite is a love of art and learning!
