Artist Nexus kicks off again this fall with continued focus on helping artists and art enthusiasts in our community enrich and develop their careers. Artist Nexus is a special program of the Duluth Art Institute that brings area artists together with informal networking, critique opportunities, discussion, and professional development workshops. Artists of all mediums and levels are welcome to drop in on one of our sessions.

This session will focus on developing artist statements and exhibition proposals with tips on how to start as well as how to improve on what you already have.
Call for Entries: Annual Membership Exhibition 2010
The Annual Membership show is fast approaching. The opportunity to get exposure for your artwork is a great perk for Duluth Art Institute members – so plan now to have your work featured in this popular exhibit.
The Annual Membership Exhibition will be on display in the Great Hall of the Depot from January 19 to March 13, 2011. Contributing members are eligible to show one new piece of original artwork created since Jan. 1, 2010. No Reproductions are allowed and work entered must be available for the entire run of the exhibit.
Memberships to the Duluth Art Institute are $30 students, $40 individuals and $60 for households. Membership forms are available in the back of this catalog.
Artwork by members will be accepted from 10 am – 5 pm January 4 – 7 at the Art Institute offices on the 4th floor of the Depot. Two-dimensional work must be limited to 30”or less per side, including matt and or frame; 3 – dimensional work must be 42” or less in diameter including stand or base. Wall-mounted works must not exceed 25 pounds. Other restrictions do apply. Call Anne Dugan, Curator at 733-7562 or email adugan@duluthartinstitute.org for information.
Exhibit Proposal Guidelines
If you are interested in having an exhibit of your work at the Duluth Art Institute we welcome your proposal. We accept proposals in digital format only. On a CD, please include:
1. 8 – 12 images (jpeg) showing a sampling of your previous work - demonstrating a commitment to art-making
2. 8 – 12 images showing the type of work you are proposing to exhibit
3. An Artist Resume
4. Artist Statement
5. Exhibition Statement – addressing what you want to say to your audience with this opportunity if your proposal is accepted
There are no deadlines for proposals. Our galleries are currently scheduled about a year and a half in advance.

Arts and Cultural Heritage Community Arts Learning Grant
Community Arts Learning Grants provides up to $5,000 to artists and arts organizations for creating activities with clearly articulated learning objectives. Targeted audiences will have interactive contact with artists, as well as a public performance or presentation. It is ARAC's intention that such projects may take place in public schools, community education sites, parks and recreation properties, or other community venues. McKnight/ARAC Career Development Grants
McKnight/ARAC Career Development Grants support and assist regional artists from all cultural backgrounds at various stages in their careers. This program encourages artistic development by assisting artists to take advantage of an impending, concrete opportunity and to nurture artistic creativity through an artist generated opportunity. This program also seeks to recognize the contributions individual artists make to the cultural environment of the Arrowhead Region. An impending, concrete opportunity must be a unique short-term opportunity that will have a significant impact on an artists’ career. This program is also designed to allow artists the time to work to achieve specific career goals by purchasing supplies and materials, participating in advanced study not related to a degree program, or pursuing other activities that will allow them to meet their artistic goals. An artist may request up to $3,000 per deadline. Deadlines: November 19, 2010 and March 31, 2011

McKnight/ARAC Individual Artist Fellowship Grant
McKnight/ARAC Individual Artist Fellowship Grants provide support to regional artists to set aside time to work to achieve specific career goals, to purchase supplies and materials, to participate in advanced study not related to a degree program, or to pursue other activities that will allow them to meet their artistic goals. Artists working in contemporary or traditionally based visual, literary, media or performing arts are eligible to apply to this program. Ceramics Studio
Have experience with clay but lack the tools and space?
Our fully operational Ceramics Studio in the Lincoln
Center has just what you are looking for. A waiting list
has been established – call today for a future
spot in the studio. (Another great way to get in the
studio – register for one of our ceramics classes!)
Photography Studio
Those with previous experience in the darkroom are eligible
to rent time in the studio at the Depot. Purchase a $10
day pass or a six-visit punch card for $50.
Digital Imaging Lab
If you have proven experience in the Digital Imaging Lab
you are eligible to rent the studio for $10/hour. Additional
supply costs may occur with extra printer use. Never
been to our lab before? Call the Education Coordinator
to set up an orientation time and get familiar with the
computers, printer, and scanner. $30 for the initial
two-hour visit.
Painting and Drawing Studio
The Lincoln Center’s all-purpose studio classroom
is an excellent place to relax and create. Rentals are
available for individuals and artist groups.
Fiber Studio
The Fiber Studio at the Depot houses floor looms, rigid
heddle looms, spinning wheels, and other equipment for
fiber fans. If you have experience but lack the space
or tools, rent time here and get creative. $10/day plus
$2 per funning foot of studio warp (if needed).
